Filling out the SSC GD Constable 2026 application form is not just about entering your personal details; it requires strategic decision-making. Two of the most critical choices you will make are your Post Preference (Forces) and, newly introduced for 2026, your Exam Week Preference.
A single mistake in your preference order cannot be changed later, even if you score the highest marks in the computer-based test (CBT). This guide will help you understand the post codes, how to arrange them strategically, and how to navigate the new exam week selection window.
Part 1: Understanding SSC GD Post Preferences & Codes
Instead of typing out the full names of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the Staff Selection Commission uses specific alphabetical codes. You must enter these codes in your preferred order during registration.
The 2026 Post Code List
Here are the official codes for the 25,487 vacancies in the 2026 recruitment cycle:
Post Code
Force Name
Work Environment
A
Border Security Force (BSF)
Border guarding (Pakistan/Bangladesh borders)
B
Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
Security for airports, metros, and vital industries
C
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
Internal security, riot control, and anti-insurgency
D
Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)
Border guarding (Nepal/Bhutan borders)
E
Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
High-altitude border guarding (China border)
F
Assam Rifles (AR)
Internal security and border duty in the Northeast
H
Secretariat Security Force (SSF)
Protection of central government secretariats in Delhi
Strategy: How to Order Your Preferences
Do not just fill in "A, B, C, D, E, F, H" randomly. Your allocation depends entirely on your CBT marks and this preference list.
- For Maximum Comfort & City Life: Put H (SSF) and B (CISF) as your first choices. SSF offers a permanent Delhi posting, while CISF keeps you in urban industrial areas. Naturally, these have the highest cut-offs.
- For Faster Promotions: B (CISF) and D (SSB) are generally known for relatively faster career progression.
- For Regional Proximity: If you are from eastern regions like West Bengal or the Northeast, choosing F (Assam Rifles) highly in your preference can keep your postings much closer to your home state.
- For Action & Large Vacancies: B (CISF) holds the massive bulk of vacancies this year (14,595 posts), followed by C (CRPF) and A (BSF). If your primary goal is simply to secure a government job regardless of the risk profile, prioritizing these will align with the largest vacancy pools.
Part 2: NEW UPDATE - The Exam Week Preference Window
To manage the massive volume of applicants efficiently, SSC has introduced a brand-new feature for the 2026 cycle: The Exam Week Preference.
Candidates are now required to indicate their preferred week to take the exam.
Important Dates to Remember
- Preference Window Opens: April 11, 2026 (15:00 Hours)
- Preference Window Closes: April 15, 2026 (17:00 Hours)
The 4 Exam Windows
You must rank all four of the following weeks in order of your convenience:
- Week 1: April 27 to May 2, 2026
- Week 2: May 4 to May 9, 2026
- Week 3: May 18 to May 23, 2026
- Week 4: May 25 to May 30, 2026
Step-by-Step: How to Submit Your Week Preference
- Log In: Visit the official portal (ssc.gov.in) between April 11th and April 15th and log into your candidate dashboard.
- Locate the Link: Look for the "SSC GD 2026 Week Preference" link under the active notifications.
- Rank the Weeks: You will see a dropdown or input boxes for Preference 1, 2, 3, and 4. You must assign a distinct week to each slot. Do not leave any blank.
- Submit: Verify your choices and hit submit. SSC will try to allocate your CBT date based on your highest available preference, subject to center capacity.
Final Checklist Before Submission
- Double-Check the Codes: Ensure you haven't accidentally typed "A" (BSF) when you meant "H" (SSF).
- Fill All Slots: Do not leave any post preference boxes empty. Even if you only want CISF, fill out the remaining codes in order of what you would tolerate. If you leave boxes blank and don't clear the CISF cut-off, you will be disqualified completely, even if you cleared the BSF cut-off.
- Beat the Rush: Submit your Exam Week Preference well before the 5:00 PM deadline on April 15th to avoid the inevitable server crash.
